Free video games for Paris fliers
Travelers at Paris’ Charles de Gaulle International have a new diversion: free video games. Starting Wednesday, Sony will place 14 PlayStation 3 consoles at the airport’s new departure lounge, which is called Parisian Gallery. The gamemaker also will place 80 PlayStation 2 consoles at different parts of Charles de Gaulle and Orly, a smaller airport south of Paris. There’s no limit on playing time. Gregory Delfosse, a Sony spokesman, says the company sees the service as a promotion opportunity.

AT&T offers some customers free Wi-Fi
AT&T announced Monday that subscribers to its higher speed broadband services will have free access to its Wi-Fi hotspots throughout the country. Subscribers who get the company’s Pro, Elite and FastAccess can use any of the company’s 10,000 hotspots located in airports, coffee shops, McDonald’s restaurants and Barnes & Noble bookstores for free. Those with lower tier services can add unlimited Wi-Fi access for $1.99 per month. Connections at AT&T Wi-Fi hot spots for non-subscribers run $7.99 per day. Nationwide, 12.9 million customers subscribe to AT&T broadband services, though spokesman Fletcher Cook said the company does not break out how many are paying for the costlier faster services.

Free Wireless Internet Available in Portions of Downtown Towson Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith announced that the county is providing free wireless Internet access in the area surrounding the downtown Towson county government buildings. This “WiFi” service will enable people to log onto the Internet for free via their laptop or other Internet-enabled wireless device. Five access points, or “hot spots,” provide access within a small geographic range around the County Circuit Courts Building, the Old Courthouse and the County Office Building, and Jefferson Building - both located on West Chesapeake Avenue, across the street from the courthouses. In about a month, two additional access points will be powered up around the Baltimore County Public Library. “This free Internet access will be a useful tool to the professionals, county staff, contractors, and others who come here to conduct business,” said County Executive Smith. Towson University is providing the connection to the Internet, Baltimore County is providing the wireless equipment. “Towson University is proud to be a partner with Baltimore County to offer wireless connectivity to our local citizens. The more we are able to help individuals connect with one another, as well as with information and resources, the stronger and more cohesive our community becomes,” said Towson President Robert L. Caret. WiFi access helps promote downtown Towson as a vibrant business destination. This service is considered a pilot program for the county with the possibility of further expansion to other areas in the future.

CQIR
Great interest is being expressed worldwide in the Irish Radio Transmitters Society’s 75th Anniversary Contest - CQIR , which will take place on the last weekend in September. The contest is a celebration of Ireland and the Irish, throughout the world and with 40 million people in the United States alone claiming Irish forefathers; we expect that CQIR will be one of the largest ‘one off’ contests ever aired on the Amateur Bands. It is a 24-hour single operator contest with the emphasis on participation rather than winning and to this end every participant gains an entry ticket for a spectacular draw for every 75 QSO’s made during the Contest. The ticket drawn out of the EI/GI drum will win an all expenses paid long weekend in New York City for two people. ARRL have confirmed that this will include a visit to their national headquarters hosted by ARRL. Kinnitty Castle in Offaly will host the international winners for a week with flights for two from anywhere in the world. The prizes have been fully sponsored at no cost to the Society and this is really an excellent opportunity to celebrate the Society and its 75 years of service to Irish experimenters. (IRTS)
