FCC Seeks Public's Help in Reform Effort
According to its chairman, the Federal Communications Commission wants to change the way it is seen by the
American public. In order to further that effort, on January 7, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski announced that
the Commission has launched a new Web site --
Reboot.FCC.gov-- saying it is the first-ever Web
site dedicated to soliciting public input on ways to improve citizen interaction with the FCC, "creating a forum
where the public can participate in improving the FCC."
The 2009 ARRL Periodicals on CD-ROM ; Now Shipping
The 2009 ARRL Periodicals on CD-ROM is now available
and includes the complete 2009 fully searchable collection of three ARRL journals --
QST, QEX, and the
National Contest Journal (NCJ). In addition, the CD-ROM
includes source code for software projects and PC board patterns, Section News, as well as the ever-popular Contest
Soapbox and Contest Results. Search the full text of every article by entering titles, call signs or names. See every
word, photo -- most in color -- drawing and table in technical and general-interest features, columns and product
reviews, plus all advertisements. Print what you see, or copy it into other applications. System requirements:
Microsoft Windows and Macintosh systems, using the industry standard Adobe Acrobat Reader software. CD-ROMs for
other years are also available.
Satellites to be built in the UK
Surrey Satellite Technology, which is headed up by Martin Sweeting, G3YJO, has been awarded a contract
to build 14 spacecraft for the Galileo Satellite Navigation project. Plans are to have the satellites coming off
the production line in the second half of 2012. Arianespace will use Russian-built Soyuz rockets to launch
these global positioning spacecraft in batches of two.
San Francisco airport expected to make WiFi a freebie
Travelers waiting to fly may soon be able to surf for free at San Francisco International Airport. Officials are expected to approve a deal on Tuesday to provide travelers a free wireless Internet connection at the airport.
The move, which would still need to be endorsed by the San Francisco City Purchaser, would bring San
Francisco in line with its Bay Area competitors. The San Jose and Oakland airports already offer free
wireless. Officials are still trying to figure out how to offset the costs of providing the free service. Some
ideas include WiFi related advertising or sponsorship.
Last Surviving Crew Member of Kon-Tiki Expedition Passes Away
Knut Magne Haugland of Norway, passed away on December 25. He was 92. Haugland was one of six men, who
with Thor Heyerdahl in 1947, successfully crossed the Pacific Ocean in a 45 foot raft made of balsa wood and
bamboo -- named Kon-Tiki -- to prove that people from South America could have settled Polynesia in pre-Columbian
times.
CES: Handheld digital televisions from LG
A host of manufacturers here at CES are showing off mobile digital TVs, little devices that look similar
to old handheld TVs, but with a twist -- they pick up digital signals.LG displayed its $249 DP570MH
Mobile Digital television here at the show, which the company calls the "first portable, battery-operated
mobile DTV." The unit can pick up "hundreds" of signals being transmitted, thanks to last year's digital
TV transition." Even on a fast-moving train, a viewer should expect robust reception from favorite local
channels," says LG's Tim Alessi, director of product development. The TV has a 7-inch screen and
shows video in 480x234 resolution.LG will ship the TV later in the spring.
